Dr. Chew graduated from University of Singapore in 1969 under Singapore State Scholarship and was awarded silver medalist for distinction in pathology in the professional examination. He worked in Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) during his housemanship year. He undertook his postgraduate training in the University Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Kandang Kerbau Maternity Hospital (KKH), and obtained his specialist degrees in 1973. He subsequently joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, University of Singapore (later called National University of Singapore), as an academic staff member and continued his career as a Lecturer and later Senior Lecturer in the department.
He did the doctorate thesis in reproductive endocrinology and was awarded the coveted Edgar-Gentili Prize by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He was the inaugural lecturer for Sheares Lecture organized by the Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Singapore and was also the recipient of a grant from the Academy of Medicine for his research in hydatidiform mole
During his 10 year tenure with the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, University of Singapore and Kandang Kerbau Maternity Hospital (KKH), Dr. Chew was actively involved in teaching and training of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors as well as routine patient care and clinical work.
Dr. Chew sub-specialty interest is in Reproductive Medicine .He was given a traveling fellowship by British Council to visit University of Aberdeen and University of Oxford and learned laboratory technology under Emeritus Professor Arnold Klopper and Dr. George Wilson. He was given the task by the late Prof S.S. Ratnam to set up the Endocirnological laboratory and collaborate with the World Health Organization for Standardization of Laboratory Results.
He has also been actively involved in the teaching and training of post-graduate doctors in the clinical management of subfertility, both locally and regionally. His research interests included molar pregnancy, initiation of labor, endocrinology of endometriosis, placental tissues, fetal membranes, umbilical cord, breast tissues, sperm and seminal fluid.
Dr.Chew is currently in private practice at Gleneagles Hospital, where he continues his sub-specialty interest in the management of subfertile couples. Apart from practicing general obstetrics and gynecology, his other clinical interests include management of Male Infertility, Male and Female Sexual Problems, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and Gynecological Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy (key-hole surgery).
