Training & Experience

Dr Tan Hong Yee received his basic medical training at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and subsequently pursued Psychiatry as his specialty. He was previously practicing at the National University Hospital (NUH) in the areas of general psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry (medical psychiatry) and geriatric psychiatry.

Dr. Tan is known for his patience and care towards his patients, and is gentle and approachable.

He is fluent in English, Mandarin, Hokkien and Teochew.

General & Medical psychiatry

Dr. Tan Hong Yee also enjoys practicing General and Medical Psychiatry. He is experienced in treating a wide variety of psychiatric conditions, including:

  • Mood disorders & grief
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Stress-related conditions and insomnia
  • Psychological distress as a result of life changes and chronic health problems
  • He frequently utilises a variety of psychotherapeutic techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) alongside medications for the treatment of psychological distress.

Old Age Psychiatry & Dementia

Dr. Tan’s particular area of interest lies in Geriatric Psychiatry (elderly/old age Psychiatry), where he believes in holistic, personalized care of both the physical and psychological needs of the elderly. Dr. Tan Hong Yee values non-medical approaches in treating dementia and related memory problems, and had previously led a team specialising in behavioral intervention and also Horticultural Therapy for dementia.

Dr. Tan Hong Yee is passionate about the continuity of care across the full spectrum of cognitive decline, from pre-dementia to palliation, and helped to pilot the integration of the Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) with the Living Matters Advance Care Planning program in his department.

Medical Education & Workshops

In addition to direct patient care, Dr Tan is also passionate about medical teaching. He had been active in the training of not only other Psychiatrists, but also colleagues from Family Medicine and Geriatric Medicine and was recognised with a teaching excellence award from the National Healthcare Group in 2015.

Dr. Tan Hong Yee is a Master Trainer for the Dementia Prevention Program, and had conducted regular training for frontline staff in Dementia care facilities such as various Nursing Homes and Dementia Day Centres. He had previously designed and conducted the flagship series of advanced Mental Health Workshops at the National University Hospital.
